Freezer Paper July 4th Shirts

Freezer paper is every crafters’ best friend and I can now see why.

I have made shirts for the boys before using Heat Transfer Vinyl and Printable Heat Transfer Material, but never using fabric paint.

For this month’s Silhouette Challenge the theme was patriotic.  Seriously you could go anywhere with that theme, but I decided the boys needed custom shirts to wear on the 4th of July.

I wanted to make a stencil out of freezer paper that I cut with my Silhouette Cameo.  I didn’t want the basic plain old flag, but I wanted something kinda flag related.

4th of July Shirts

So I cam up with this shirt for Sid.  It says “Stars and Stripes” and has coordinating graphics with the words.  And it was done in Red, White, & Blue.  Tots Adorbs huh?

Since I didn’t actually want them to match I decided to make Ian a Capt. America shirt.  Because who is more patriotic than Capt. America?

The process

Create and cut your design, you don’t have to use a cutting machine to make a shirt out of freezer paper but it sure is helpful.

Freezer Paper Stencil

In the cutting machine the freezer paper can be cut with shiny side up or shiny side down.  However, the shiny side is the side you will iron to your fabric, so if you cut shiny side up, you will need to mirror (flip horizontally) your design.  I used a blade of 2, speed of 3 and thickness of 10.  But there has been a variety of recommended settings on-line, so make sure to do a test cut first.

Freezer Paper Stencil Ironed on

Iron on your stencil.  Put the shiny side down on your fabric and use a dry iron on the setting for your fabric.  Use lots of pressure, and pay extra special attention to the edges.  You don’t want paint to bleed under the stencil.  Freezer paper and transfer tape don’t mix, so you will have to put all those little letter innards back by hand.  I made font decisions with this in consideration.

Use a sponge to paint

Here is a little confession.  I don’t paint much, so I didn’t have any paint sponges or foam brushes or anything at home.  You know what I did have though?  Make-up foam applicator, which worked just fine.

Make sure you place a piece of cardboard or a few pieces of cardstock between the layers of your shirt.  The paint can bleed through, and you don’t want it showing up on the back of your shirt.

Freezer Paper Shirt

Make sure you dab and lift, do not brush.  Brushing can lead to paint bleeding under your stencil.  The idea is have many thin layers of paint instead of  one thick one.  I decided I wanted the ‘and’ to be a mix of red and blue, because I didn’t want too much of one color.

Freezer Paper Shirt

Let your paint dry and peel up your stencil.  You may have to hold down the shirt to avoid stretching the newly painted fabric.

MSS_July4th_shirt09

Most fabric paint requires you to heat set it, running the iron over the design so the paint doesn’t wash off.  The fabric paint I bought did not have that on the instructions, but I did it anyway.  I ran the iron over the front of the shirt, with a pillowcase in between, after is had dried for a couple of days.  I turned it inside out and washed it after that.

If you notice above the word “stars” you can see a little smear of red pain because the frame of my stencil was too small.  I didn’t run the iron over that part, and it was mostly gone after washing it.  So I am glad I did heat set the rest of the shirt.

Stars & Strips Shirt

The Captain America shirt seemed like it was going to be easy, but I forgot about the fact that there is a red circle next to a blue circle with no white between.

So I had to paint it on two different days.

Freezer Paper Capt America

The stencils were different circles, so the inner white circle is actually two.  After all the above was dry, I removed the circle next to the blue, but left the one where it should be white.  I then added another circle to cover the blue center.  This one didn’t stick as well because I was afraid to mess up the paint, so I didn’t press to hard or long.

MSS_July4th_shirt05

This lead to some bleeding of the red paint in to the blue circle.

But it only looks bad close up.

MSS_July4th_shirt06

My older son then informed me he no longer likes Capt. America, so he wouldn’t wear the shirt for me.

MSS_July4th_shirt01

He did tell me he was a Mystic Forest Ranger Zombie Hunter though.

MSS_July4th_shirt14

At least Sid was cooperative.

Easter Bunny Juice Boxes for a Preschool Easter Party

Ian has his Easter party at school today.
So what do I volunteer to bring?
Juice boxes of course because I can make them look like super cute little bunnies.
I found these Hansen’s Junior Juice
boxes and thought the would be perfect because there are just 4.23 oz, a perfect size for little 4 & 5 year olds.

20140416-185907.jpg
I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut out all the parts for the bunny.

20140416-190102.jpg
I was grateful that I had two mats!  I could load another one to cut, while I was taking all these little parts off.
I then just glued them all together and wrapped around the boxes.

20140416-190217.jpg
I made 20 boxes and was able to use one 12×12″ sheet of pink card stock, scrap pieces of black and 7 sheets of 8.5×11″ white card stock. I also had the googly eyes, so I only had to buy the juice boxes, which I got 20 for less than $7.

20140416-190621.jpg

I also broke out my Cameo to make a letter matching egg game. I got the eggs 18/$1 and I already had the vinyl. I cut out an upper case and a lower case letter, and put them on different colored eggs.

20140416-190832.jpg
I put the upper case on the top half and lower case on the bottom half. The kids then would match the two letter s together.

20140416-190926.jpg

We also had the kids make rabbit masks to hold up for a group picture.

20140416-191013.jpg

You need a paper plate, card stock for the ears (white and pink), pipe cleaners for the whiskers and craft sticks for a handle.

We cut out the center of the plate, made a template for the ears and let the kids cut the ears and glue them together.

20140416-191243.jpg

They turned really cute and we were able to get a great group picture.

Happy Easter

Hand Made Decorations for a Pirate Party

This past month I have been busy making Ian’s birthday party decorations.  I wanted to share a few of the items I am making.

I don’t want to spoil the surprise, so this is just a sneak peek at what I can do now that I have my Silhouette Cameo to help me.

Ian had decided he wanted a pirate birthday party this year.  I wanted his invitations to be pirate chests that open up to revel treasure, and a treasure map.

MSS_MarchSilChallenge09_2014

I quickly gave up trying to draw a treasure chest and just purchased a cut file from the Silhouette Studio Store.  After which I ran it through my Cuttlebug to emboss the paper with a wood grain.

MSS_MarchSilChallenge06_2014

I went to Photoshop and created a picture of coins and jewels that matched the shape of the card.  I imported that image into the Silhouette Studio software so that my machine would cut around all the little shapes for me.

MSS_MarchSilChallenge04_2014

I also created a cut out that would contain all the information on the card.

It says

“Avast, me hearties!
Join us for a swashbucklin’ adventure
Shiver me timbers! Captain Ian is turning 4
Board ye ship ‘n follow ’tis old map
to find a buried birthday treasure!”

MSS_MarchSilChallenge07_2014

I used the digital graphics from Just So Scrappy‘s YoHo Pirate kit (as I will do for various other items I made for this party) to make cut out a treasure map.

MSS_MarchSilChallenge08_2014

The three elements inside the card were made with the Silhouette’s Print ‘n Cut feature, which I think is da bomb!

I cut the treasure chests out in a light brown and dark brown cardstock.  I also cut the straps in the same two colors, I then used the light straps on the dark chest and vice versa.  The buckles and locks were cut out using a gold-colored cardstock.  I glued all the elements together, except the map, which I attached with a brad so it can be moved.

Using the same digital graphics I created a pirate flag topiary  table decoration.  I had to create my own cut file for the flag portion, cutting out the skull and crossbones.

MSS_MarchSilChallenge05_2014

I sandwiched a white piece of cardstock in between the two flag pieces, which I glued to a paper straw.  The base is made using the print and cut feature, it is an adapted cupcake wrapper shape.

MSS_MarchSilChallenge_2014 copy

And what it just wouldn’t be a party with out party hats!

MSS_MarchSilChallenge10_2014

For the pin wheel I used the sketch feature that can only be found in the Silhouette Studio Designer Edition.

MSS_MarchSilChallenge02_2014

I ‘hand’ drew the skull and bones, and by hand I mean I used the draw polygon tool.  I used the sketch tool to make the skull look more hand-drawn.  I used a black Sharpie Marker to draw the lines with the Cameo and then made the cut around it.

MSS_MarchSilChallenge03_2014

This is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to decorations that can be made using a personal cutting machine.  I would never have been able to cut out all the pieces to make forty invitations, if I had to do it by hand.

I have much more planned and will revel more after the party.

Birthday Pirate Shirt

When my son makes a decision he sticks to it.  The past two Halloween’s I asked him to pick a costume in August and he stuck to that choice. For TWO months.

Oh, did I mention he is three?

His birthday is next month, March, so in December I mentioned that we needed to start thinking about a theme for his birthday party.

Without hesitation he asked for a Skeleton Birthday party.

We were in the car with my husband and we were talking about it and this is what was said:

Hubby: do you want a Dia de Muertos party?
Ian: No dad. A skeleton party.
Hubby: I know but a Dia de Muertos party has skeletons…
Ian: No Dad! a skeleton party because skeletons are my favorite.  Skeletons, turtles and seals are my favorites.

So I started planning a skeleton party.  For about a week.  Until we got a catalog with party supplies in the mail.

Ian looked through it for a few days.  He kept talking about who was going to have what party.  He then said “This boy is gonna have a pirate birfday party” while pointing to his chest.

After some discussion we decided to have a pirate party instead of a skeleton party.  There was still almost three months to plan.

He has not changed his mind, but he has picked out his next five party themes.

I wanted to make him a shirt for his birthday party.  My Silhouette Cameo has the ability to cut heat transfer material to iron on clothes.

I designed a shirt with a skull and crossbones wearing a birthday party hat and the words “Birthday Pirate” instead of ‘Birthday Boy’

It was going to be a surprise but when the only time you have to work on something is when the kids are home nothing is a surprise.   Everyday he asked where his skeleton shirt was and if he could wear it.

MSS_BirthdayPirateShirt

I was finally able to say yes, and he was so excited.  Only about 2 months before his party.

You can read about the process in a three part series starting here.
