Running Log ~ July 21st ~ lead feet

Lead Feet and Injuries

The heat, the humidity and the allergies have been hitting me pretty hard this summer and my runs have been getting slower.

The last week in June I started running early in the morning at the gym on the treadmill. It was horrible, but at least I was running, because when it was already 70° at 6 a.m. there was no way I was running outside that day.

treadmills

But I had a virtual race and a long rung scheduled just before the July 4th holiday and didn’t want to do 8 miles on the treadmill.

So I got up early and hit the road, I picked a route next to the river for some cool air.

But my feet felt like lead weights.  It was still too hot, my allergies was making it hard to breathe.  It was the slowest run I had done in forever.

And I say that like I have been running forever…when really I started running again only a year and a half ago, and hadn’t run more than 8 miles before Aug of last year.

So I got my run done, and I was so disappointed in myself, but decided that I needed to get back to the gym and start using the treadmill again.  This way I can set my pace, turn a movie on and just keep going.

After the holiday we went on our friends boat and slammed my knee on the fishing pole rack.  I didn’t think it was that hard, it didn’t hurt, and I didn’t think anything of it.  Then I woke up in the middle of the night with excruciating pain in my knee.

I couldn’t keep it bent for more than a minute, two at the most.  If I hyperextended my leg it was equally painful, so when sleeping and stretching my leg I would wake in pain.

I couldn’t go up or down stairs, I couldn’t sit, and it was painful standing from a sitting position. I couldn’t drive without something propping my foot up (it was my left knee and I have an automatic). My leg at a 90° angle brought swear words flowing out of my mouth.

At first I didn’t realize what happened, how I hurt myself, but then I figured I must have bruised my kneecap (patella) when I hit the fishing pole rack.  I don’t know if you have ever bruised a bone, but it isn’t sunshine and daisy’s.  Walking was fine as long as I didn’t bend my leg too much, but running was out of the question.

That’s OK. I can rest an injury, as long as it isn’t too long…

Two weeks go by with no running and I can finally sit with my leg bent for longer than a few minutes.  I can do stairs, my knee still hurts, but it is healing.  I think I am finally safe to try running again…when I hurt my back and my allergies might really be a cold (but don’t tell anyone, cause I don’t actually get ‘colds’).

really?

*sigh*

this too shall pass.

But I am feeling slightly depressed about not running. Okay, I am feeling really depressed about not running.  I am tired and I am grouchy. So this week is also going to be a rest week, and next week I will come back with a vengeance.

Going for a run is like having a cup of coffee... I'm much nicer after I've had one.

But there is good news in here too.

Running Log ~ June 17th

I am a little behind in my writing.  In fact I have a few races I need to share, and you know what the hold up is?  It’s the pictures.  I keep losing my patience with my computer and shutting it down and not finishing the editing of my pictures.  That’s pretty lame huh?

But anyway…

I decided to sign up for a marathon training plan through Another Mother Runner.  It is an 18 week plan and at the end we get a shirt and a medal, with lots of support along the way.  Currently I am on week three.  Not only does the plan have the scheduled long runs but it also has scheduled speed work, which I wouldn’t do on my own.

It times perfectly with the Portland Marathon in October, which I have not yet signed up for.  The price went up and so I need to save some more money before I can sign up…(hope there are still spots left)

motivate

The first week of the training plan was awesome.  I was scheduled to run 19.5 miles and got 22.8 in! woohoo!

The second week, was not as awesome. I missed a run and instead of the 23.5 miles I only got 19.7 miles in.  I was almost afraid I wasn’t going to get that many. I went to the gym to run 6 miles of negative splits but had to get off to refill my water somewhere around 3 miles, the treadmill reset itself before I got back.  I had no idea how far or how long I ran.  I was supposed to run 10 miles Sat morning but I set my alarm for the wrong day and woke up late, so I only got six miles in, but at least they were negative split miles.  I was finally able to do my long run on Sunday morning, but it was so slow! but at least I got it done.

half-marathon

I usually do a long run on the weekend and short runs at work, but with summer here I can’t run at work now, it is just too hot.  It is really hard to find the time during the week to get the miles outside with out the heat.

The hardest part about the training is cross-training and/or strength training.  I can barely find the time to run, let alone time for other things like weights.

I have signed up for four races prior to the marathon and decided that I will not sign up for any more until after.  I have a 10k in July, a 7k in August, a half marathon and a relay with a total of 10-12 miles in September.  Ian has a 1k race at the end of June, which I will have to run with him, but I think I can manage that.

Running Log ~ Feb 20th

I finally got a long in this past weekend.

My cousin is running a half marathon the same weekend I am running my 15k.  So she needs to get her miles in and start tapering off to be ready for her half.  I on the other hand really only need to prepare to do 10 miles in a couple of weeks.

Since I haven’t ran more than 4 miles in a while, I took it slow and I only ran 9 miles instead of 10.  I also had to do some walking in there, and the rest of the ladies sometimes stopped and waited for me to catch up (even though I told them not to).  For the long runs, it’s not about the time, it’s just about the distance.

love the long run

When we got to the 4 mile mark I knew I didn’t want to run all 10 miles, cause we still had to go back to where we started.  I told them to go ahead and we would meet up on their way back.  I walked a little and ran a little till 4.5 miles, then I turned around and headed back, I stopped a couple of times to wait for them, but got cold and board so I kept moving.  They caught up to me and passed me on the return, but I was ok with that.

I like the group run, but I like the solo runs even more.  This worked out nice because I get the fun of a group run after and during pit stops, but I can kind of run by myself (with them all in front of me).  A little of both worlds.

running quote

Lately I have been running while at work, taking a break to get 3 miles on the hill done.  I realized I don’t like running at night anymore, I am just too tired.  And if I am being honest, that is really the time that I get all my crafting done.  I can’t function in the morning, so if I do try to run I am super slow.  It is really great to run in the middle of the day, and it is a nice break from work.  I also enjoy it because the weather here has been so nice, if I waited till the boys went to bed I’d have to go to they gym and I wouldn’t get to run outside.

My cousin wants to do 11 miles this weekend….

Racing Bib and Medal Display

Who know that almost one year ago I would run my first race and become an addict?

MSS_race bib display

After running the Shamrock run last March I knew that I would continue to race as long as I can, as many races I could.  Last year I was able to participate in five races.  Two of those races included finisher medals.

I was a loss for what to do with the bibs and medals from the races.  I am kind of sentimentalist so I knew I wanted to keep them, but how do I display them?

I figured I wanted a sign with an encouraging phrase on it and hooks to hang everything.  I also wanted to incorporate the distances I ran and one that I will run.  I found a blank wood sign at the craft store for less than $5.  I picked up the hooks at my one-stop-shopping store for a couple bucks, including the back brackets for hanging.  Because of the size of the sign I decided to attach the medal hook to the back and purchased a hook specially designed for that.  The paper and vinyl I already had.

I first painted the wood, but didn’t like that look, so I covered it with scrapbook paper using Mod Podge.

After determining the size of the area I had to work with I went to my Silhouette Studio to design my sign.  I used the distance (in miles) of a 5k, 10k, half marathon and full marathon (which I plan on running this year).  I used the quote “Take in the fact that you just did that”  I really liked the quote because it reminds me that every race, every run is an accomplishment.

I planned on using white vinyl for the numbers, because I wanted them in the background and not over powering the sign.

After cutting out the vinyl and taking the backing off the numbers I realized my vinyl was clear, not white.  I am not even sure where I got clear vinyl….

I thought it would be ok, and that the clear vinyl would make subtle.  It was, too much so.  If I looked at the right angle I could see the shiny numbers but I needed them to stand out a little more.

I took my white chalk pen and went around the numbers, it gave them more depth and I was now able to see them.  I actually like it better than if I used white vinyl because it is visible but subtle.  I went over the whole thing with a coat of Mod Podge to protect the paper.

At first I thought I would position the bib hooks so they would hang flat, one hook in each corner of the bib.  But I realized that even with only my five bibs there was a size difference, so that wouldn’t work and I decided I would just hang them by one corner.  This also allows for another hook if I need it.

I attached the hanging brackets and medal hook to the back, with screws.

Side note: I had to use one hanging bracket on each corner because the sign weight was uneven with the weight of the medals.  If I put one bracket in the middle it would tip towards the medal side.

I was going to put it in the living room, but decided the wall above my dresser was a better choice.

So now when I get up in the morning I get to see it.

It will also be easy to add my new bibs after each race.

Of course I am hoping that I will fill it up and need to make another one!
