Pinterest Tuesday Feb 5

On the first Tuesday of every month I will post about something I found on Pinterest that I actually did!  Sometimes it will be about a craft project, sometimes about food and sometimes about a ‘miracle’ cleaning product.

So this months Pinterest Post is actually something I didn’t make, but enlisted my to do so for me.  While I probably could have fumbled my way through this project, it was much quicker to ask my mom.

It is all about nursing!

I saw this pin:

and knew I needed to do this.

One of the things I hated about nursing was the exposed stomach and/or back.  I have a few nursing tops that fix that problem, but they are expensive.

I also have a few of these nursing tank tops from Target.  Which I love, but let’s be honest, there is no support for anyone larger than a B cup.  Plus they are thick and so not very good for wearing under shirts.  But I do live in them at home.

I have a nursing cover, so that takes care of the front, but I still hated thinking my back was exposed.  Not to mention when I am pumping, while no one can really see my torso, it gets uncomfortable and cold.  I thought this was a great solution.

I am not going to post a tutorial because I want you to visit her site to get it.  It is really easy to do, you don’t really even need to know how to sew.

Basically you start with a tank top/cami, I got mine at Forever 21 and only paid about $3 a piece.  I guess everyone knew about their cheap cami prices, but it was news to me!

I then printed the tutorial out for my mom and gave her the camis.

This is what she gave back to me:

My finished cami

I  had her add a little bit of elastic to the back to help hold it up.  They actually stay up just fine as long as the tank is not too big, but it makes me feel better to have the elastic.

How my cami hooks to my bra

I just attach to my bra and go!  They are not really good for layering if you have a low-cut top because they do sit kind of low on your bust line.

The tutorial is really easy to follow and these are so easy to make!

My mom is so handy with a sewing machine!  I also had my mom make me one of these when I had my first son:

She just used whatever fabric and bra clasp she had around. It fits more like a bikini top then the ones you can buy.  If you are handy with a sewing machine it is fairly easy to make.  Sorry, I wish I had directions on how to do it, but my mom was the one who put it together.  If I have her make me another one I will post it.  She really made me more than one, but I ended up giving them away!

This is another great tutorial for us nursing mamas:

It is hard to find a good bra, let alone a good nursing one.  So it is great that you can take a normal bra that fist the way it should and turn it in to a nursing one.  I haven’t made this one yet, but the tutorial  makes it look easy.

The Things Kids Say and Menu Plan Monday Jan 28

Since my toddler has started talking he has been making me laugh, constantly.

I try to remember all the funny things he says, but it is hard.  I tell myself to remember that one, and I will write it down later.  But when later comes I can’t remember what he said.

Sometimes it is just that he says a phrase that I say, or someone else always says and it is so cute coming out of his mouth.  Lately he says “hey, what’s da big idea?” from Donald Duck.

The way he interacts with Baby Sid is so cute that I wish we were filming him at all times!

Last night Ian was taking a bath (our house is very small) and Baby Sid was in the living room in his swing with Dad.  Baby Sid hadn’t felt well and started crying.  Ian yells from the bathroom “It’s OK Baby Sid, I just takin’ a bath….Don’t worry Baby Sid, Mama’s commin’…..Shhh, it’s OK Baby Sid, I almost der.”  And other things of that nature, even though Baby Sid had stopped crying and was just making noises now.

I have been putting up a few of our conversations up on my Facebook page and I hope to put some up here as well.

He had us crackin’ up all weekend.  It was really  nice that my husband finally had a weekend off and the kids and I didn’t have any plans.  We all spent the whole weekend at home.  We did a lot of building with Legos.

Legos

Update: This morning after Ian came out of his room and this was our conversation

Ian: Mama, where your brudder at? (He calls Baby Sid ‘your brother’ because that I what I sometimes say)

Me: he is still sleeping

Ian: I go see him

Me: he is sleeping, please don’t wake him up

Ian: I be quiet, like dis (he then starts to whisper) I say ‘it’s OK, Baby Sid’

Me: ok, but don’t wake him please

Ian: (after coming out of the bedroom, with a panic in his voice) I can’t find him, Baby Sid not der

Me: yes, honey, Baby Sid is in our bed, sleeping

Ian: no Mama, he all gone, I can’t find him

Me: don’t worry honey, he is just sleeping (I pick him up to show him)

Ian: Baby Sid all gone (he is starting to cry) I can’t see him, I can’t find him!…..Oh, der he is, he sleeping, he so cute…..whew, dat was close

Menu Plan Jan 28-Feb 3

Mon: Baked Creamy Chicken Taquitos* with Spanish Rice

Tue: Philly Cheese Steak Sloppy Joe Rolls (recipe to come next week)

Wed: Baked Chicken Cordon Blu** with Arkansas Green Beans***

Thr: Taco Bake

Fri: Autumn Sausage Casserole

Sat: Leftovers

**I don’t actually make the Chicken Cordon Blu, I buy it from the meat counter at our local Fred Meyer Store.  I just use this recipe for the sauce.
***48 oz of frozen green beans is WAY too much for our family so I down size it to one bag

Best laid plans….

Have you ever noticed how reality doesn’t match our expectations?

I have a plan on how my mornings should go, but some how that never happens.

This was my plan this morning:

5 am ~ semi-wake up to feed Baby Sid, then go back to sleep

6 am ~ get up, get coffee and pump

6:30 am ~ shower & get ready

7 am ~ feed Baby Sid again

7:20 am ~ turn van on to warm it up for the kidos

7:22 am ~ get Baby Sid changed and in his car seat ready to go

7:30 am ~ get Ian up and ready to go

7:40 am ~ calmly and efficiently load up kids to take to the sitters

Here is what REALLY happened:

4:40 am ~ Baby Sid wakes up and wants to eat

5:50 am ~ Ian goes to bathroom door crying “Mama, I need to see you a minute” not knowing my husband was the one in the shower.

5:52 am ~ Ian crawls into our bed, after I tell him where I was.

6 am ~ put Ian in his bed with a movie and something to drink

6:06 am ~ change Baby Sid and put him in the swing and hope he goes back to sleep

6:10 am ~ pump while drinking coffee (finally!)

6:15 am ~ Ian comes out of his bedroom wanting to ‘watch Tall Star Wars in da living room’

6:34 am ~ turn on Return of the Jedi

6:45 am ~ shower time

7 am ~ find Ian asleep on the couch, time for me to get ready

Sleeping Ian

7:20 am ~ wake up Baby Sid and try to feed him

7:26 am ~ Baby Sid won’t eat take him to clean out his nose

7:31 am ~ try to feed Baby Sid again, still won’t eat

7:37 am ~ go out to start van

7:39 am ~ change Baby Sid, take some pictures because he is so cute and then put him in his car seat

Baby Sid

7:42 am ~ run around the house in circles trying to locate everything we need and get my shoes on

7:55 am ~ put a sweatshirt on Ian and take the still sleeping boy out to car and buckle him in.

7:58 am ~ take Baby Sid out to car

7:50 am ~ make at least four trips back into the house to get things I had forgotten

8:02 am ~ leave for sitters house

Maybe Thursday will be easier….

Happy Reality Check!

Homemade Baby Food

I want what’s best for my children.  That’s why I have ruined my boobs by breast-feeding for more than a year and spend all that time pumping and washing pump parts.

When Ian started eating solid food I felt the brand Earth’s Best was, well, the best.  However, I found there was a lack of variety in the vegetables.  I couldn’t find a broccoli puree, there might have been one, but I couldn’t find it.  Gerber baby food had a lot of varieties but I preferred to buy organic.  Of course now there are more organic brands and a lot more variety.

I decided to start making my own.  Not only for the cost, but also to ensure my baby got a variety of foods and combinations.  I looked for some books to help me with ideas.  The first book I bought was Top 100 Baby Purees by Annabel Karmel.  She had some combinations that I wouldn’t have thought of like banana, avocado and yogurt.  I didn’t make things like green beans because it was easier to buy them.

I then found this book Super Baby Food by Ruth Yaron.  I like the book, but I don’t like her writing style.  She comes across as very condescending.  There are a lot of recipes for children over a year but not that many for baby purees.  I found it to be a good resource for the timing of different food introduction and storage.  One good thing is the Super Porridge she talks about.

This is a high protein porridge made with milled grains and legumes.  I started to make it and would mix in fruits and vegetables.  The combination that Ian liked best was banana and avocado with broccoli and sometimes green beans or peas.  After making the porridge I would run it through the blender again to make it more of a puree texture.

I know what you are thinking….YUCK! but he loved it, and still eats it.  I don’t always make it, just when I am concerned about his food intake.

Ian Eating

Then the baby food companies came out with the food pouches (we call them smoothie pouches).  I think these things are the best thing ever!  Completely portable and they won’t break in the diaper bag.  Plus I can give one to Ian and he can feed himself.  I think they are great to keep on hand in the car for snack emergencies.

Over the last year there has been an influx of brands and food combinations available.  But they are pretty costly, usually about a buck and a half each.  So I had been trying to find a way to make reusable smoothie pouches for Ian’s porridge.

Of course I am too late.  I was at Babies R Us the other day to replace the car seats after the accident was wandering around the food prep area.  That is when I saw they had the Baby Bullet (which I had been thinking about getting) and what did I find on display with it?  Infantino has a new product line called Fresh Squeezed which has the Squeeze Station.

Baby Food Maker

With the Squeeze Station you can fill your own smoothie pouches!  Now these ones are not reusable, but they do make a reusable one called the Keeper Squeeze Pouch, but they didn’t have that when I bought my Squeeze Station.  However, I will be purchasing a few of those too when I can find them.

So after purchasing the combination of Baby Bullet and Squeeze Station I went home and made Ian some porridge.

Ian's Porridge

My one batch of porridge filled 7 pouches and it was really easy to use.  I am very excited about this!

Ian's Porridge Pouch

This will be really fun when Baby Sid starts on solids.
