My Little Man Mustache Baby Shower

Do you have a second baby shower when the next kid is the same gender as the first?

What is the proper protocol for baby showers?  Who really cares?  If you want one have one!

My sister threw my shower when I was pregnant the first time with my oldest son.  When I was about six months pregnant with my second son she asked me about having another one.  To which I replied, “I am not throwing it, so it is not up to me.”

She and my mom decided to have a shower-meet-the-new-baby-party after he was born.  And naturally I was left to choose my own theme and make my own decorations.

I decided to do a Little Man with a Mustache theme.  I liked all the mustache and tie stuff I have seen on Pinterest.

While this happened in Sept. I figured I should post about it while we are still in Movember since it was full of mustaches!

Here are some of the pictures from the party:

  1. Our take home treats.  I just love the “Before you mustache (must dash) please grab a treat” sign.  I also made a couple of banners of mustaches and neck ties
  2. “Wet your Whisker” for the lemonade punch
  3. For the take home treats my sister made sugar cookies in the shape of mustaches.  She even had to make a ‘cookie cutter’
  4. I made little mustaches that we put on bendy straws for some sipping
  5. My mom found these mustache stickers at Party City, so it is only fitting the man of the hour wear one.
  6. A few outfits for my little man
  7. I made this banner that said “Boy oh Boy” I saw a similar one here via Pinterest
  8. My aunt made Sid’s cake, it was Kahlua cream! Can you say super YUMMM!!  I love the onesies with neck ties
  9. I also made some food tags and got the Keep Calm sign idea from the same blog as the banner.  My sister made “Cigar” pretzels dipped in chocolate.

We all had a great time getting together and passing around the baby.

How to Potty Train Boys

OK, so I don’t have an easy answer for this topic.  I did lots of reading and research on this topic.  Nothing helped me.

My oldest son is two and a half years old.  Last fall, when he was about eighteen months old, we started introducing the toilet to him.  I would put him on the toilet and we would sit there singing songs or reading books till he went and then I would point out to him what he did.

I would then talk to him about it while changing his diaper and suggest he use the bathroom instead.  This worked and I was very hopeful for potty training success.  But then the Christmas holidays came and we got busy so potty training went on the back burner.

So when the new year came we started again.  Then he would refuse and flip out when I tried to put him on the toilet.  I knew  couldn’t force it because that would only make it worse for him.  So we took a break.

For the next six months or so he would sometimes be ok with it and sometimes not.  One day in the spring he didn’t want to wear a diaper, since he was staying home with my mother-in-law I let him.  I don’t know what happened that day, but he wouldn’t use the toilet for months after.

As the summer came nearer I really wanted to get him trained, especially since the new baby would be here in Sept.  My son is a very stubborn boy, if I pushed him too hard he would rebel.  So we had to talk about it all the time and when we stayed home for the day I would put him in big boy pants.

Everyone would tell me that it is ok he is not trained, boys are harder than girls, or their kids weren’t trained till three, or he just isn’t ready yet.

I didn’t believe any of those reasons.  He knew what was going on.  He knew when he had to go to the bathroom, how to hold it if he wanted to.  The problem was me.  As much as I disliked changing diapers, it was much more convenient then taking him to the bathroom all the time.

I couldn’t take the time off work to stay home with him because I was going on maternity leave soon.  I decided to wait till I was on leave to train him.

One Monday I decided it was time.  From the time he woke up till the time he went to sleep he wore big boy pants and we didn’t leave the house.  He did great.  It only took a couple of days for him to figure it out.

When he would have an accident we would talk about it, clean him up and change clothes.  I would then remind him to tell me when he has to go.

We had some accidents, and we still do every once in a while, but over all he is trained.  I still put him in a diaper for bed time at night, but when he is still awake he tells me when he has to go, and sometimes he wakes up to tell me.

I still constantly ask him if he needs to go, because sometimes he forgets and gets sidetracked.  He isn’t a master at holding it yet.

For me I think potty training is different for everyone and if you trust the kid then they will know when it is time.  I also learned patience is necessary.

Meal Plan Monday

As I discussed last Monday I use a meal planning program to plan out my meals for the moth or week.

The program I use is an online program that stores recipes and has a drag and drop style planner.  Once the meals are planned it generates a shopping list which you can edit and move items to a pantry list.  There are many other features that I really like; the ability to share recipes with other members, easy importing from websites or blogs, and many others.

If you want to learn more about it you can go to their site and try it for free or purchase a subscription today at 50% off!

Black Friday Rule

Happy Black Friday!

Did you go shopping?  Brave the lines? Get great deals?

Some stores were open on Thanksgiving and my sister wanted me to go do some shopping with her.  I was tempted, but didn’t end up going, nor did I brave the crowds early Friday morning.

In the past I had found great deals on Black Friday, but I don’t seem to see them so much anymore.  They have some great deals on big electronics, but that is not what I am shopping for.

My oldest son wants action figures and Lego’s, my youngest doesn’t even know what toys are yet.  Those things just don’t get the deals, so no I didn’t get up early and spend all my money.

My sister actually went out on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and got some really great deals.  So, is all that chaos really worth it?  I used to think so, but not anymore.  Of course, this also means I still have lots of shopping to do before the big day.

Baby Sid had a great first Thanksgiving, too bad he didn’t get to enjoy the food this year 🙂
