The Like Button, Comments and Anonymity on the Internet

{click} for source

{click} for source

We have all seen it, the Like Button.  I don’t know if Facebook was the first to add a like option, or if it was a blog like WordPress to do it.  The history lesson seemed irrelevant to me at the moment.

I just know it has powered a craze to get liked!  I enjoy the fact that I can show my support of a comment or picture without having to leave a comment saying how great the post was.  Although, I find myself looking for a ‘like’ button on everything!  I want a ‘like’ button on emails, texts, phone calls, things I see walking around….

However, I have found that I now hold my liking in reserve.  I never like the viral pictures that float around Facebook.  I don’t know why but I just can’t do it.  Even the ones that are attached to a picture of an object and  say “like if you remember this item.”

I saw this picture on Pinterest once and thought it was so funny.  I tried to find the original source, but can’t.  I have the link to where I found the picture though.

The other trend that has been happening to is “If I get 1,000,000,000 my dad said I could get a dog” or go to Disneyland, or still love me…or some other such nonsense.  LikeMyKidsI don’t ‘like’ these posts either.  I don’t know why but I hold my likes in reserve for family and friends that deserve them.

Then why do I hold my breath till someone likes my post?  And really what difference does it make?  Do we get a reward for having a large number of ‘likes’?

We all need validation, for the things we say, for the things we do, how we look, and everything in between.  It makes us feel good and, well….Liked.  I love to see the notification on the top banner of my blog indicating someone has liked one of my posts, or the similar notification on Facebook.

It is nice to get comments on our blogs because it means someone is reading them and enjoying the words we have put down to paper, err, um, I mean screen.   With this ability is the option to not reveal whom is leaving the comment.  Not that you have to put that much information down when you comment, nor does it even need to be accurate.

I feel this anonymity has led us to be less tactful with the things we say.  Recently I came across a pin on Pinterst about how to cut your boy’s hair.  I wasn’t looking for a tutorial on cutting my son’s hair at home, but I went to the blog to check it out.  I know how to use a razor and a pair of scissors but I don’t think I would attempt more than a buzz cut at home.

However I wanted to look read the tutorial to see if maybe, just maybe I could cut my son’s ragamuffin hair (see picture above), that way people will stop calling him a girl!  I was going to leave a comment about how nice a tutorial it was and would love a video, but I wanted to make sure no one else had made a similar comment.  I don’t like to ask a question that had already been asked and answered.  So I started reading the comments and was appalled at the rudeness of some of them.

There were others in her profession that didn’t like the fact that she posted a tutorial about something they all spent money to learn.  That lead others to write in her defense and then others to write more negative comments about her post, then others to write negative comments about the negative comments.  Her innocent post meant to help mothers turned into a debate about blog posts.

Upon reading the comments I noticed that the comments that said bad things about the author were written by anonymous.  It made me wonder if those people would have been so forth coming with their negative comments if they couldn’t be anonymous.

It is a lot harder to say mean things when we are face to face with people and they know our name.  I felt a strong urge to stand up and defend her with my own comment, but I would then be just adding fuel to the fire.  The comment section of her blog post it not a place to debate or berate other people for their opinion.  And that would make me no better than the other negative people.

The great thing about the internet is: we don’t have to read what we don’t want to!  I know, shocking right?  If you don’t like a blog post or website or someone’s opinion, don’t read it.

There is a lot out there in cyber space.  Some of it is good, some of it is bad.  Some of it is positive, some of it is negative.  Some of it is correct and some of it is wrong.  There is no need to add to the negativity and false information.

I don’t think we should “like” everything, and I don’t think we should hide behind anonymity to berate others work.  So please be nice, play well with others, and don’t compete for a number of  ‘likes’.

but go ahead and ‘like’ this post…

The Things Kids Say and Menu Plan Monday Jan 28

Since my toddler has started talking he has been making me laugh, constantly.

I try to remember all the funny things he says, but it is hard.  I tell myself to remember that one, and I will write it down later.  But when later comes I can’t remember what he said.

Sometimes it is just that he says a phrase that I say, or someone else always says and it is so cute coming out of his mouth.  Lately he says “hey, what’s da big idea?” from Donald Duck.

The way he interacts with Baby Sid is so cute that I wish we were filming him at all times!

Last night Ian was taking a bath (our house is very small) and Baby Sid was in the living room in his swing with Dad.  Baby Sid hadn’t felt well and started crying.  Ian yells from the bathroom “It’s OK Baby Sid, I just takin’ a bath….Don’t worry Baby Sid, Mama’s commin’…..Shhh, it’s OK Baby Sid, I almost der.”  And other things of that nature, even though Baby Sid had stopped crying and was just making noises now.

I have been putting up a few of our conversations up on my Facebook page and I hope to put some up here as well.

He had us crackin’ up all weekend.  It was really  nice that my husband finally had a weekend off and the kids and I didn’t have any plans.  We all spent the whole weekend at home.  We did a lot of building with Legos.

Legos

Update: This morning after Ian came out of his room and this was our conversation

Ian: Mama, where your brudder at? (He calls Baby Sid ‘your brother’ because that I what I sometimes say)

Me: he is still sleeping

Ian: I go see him

Me: he is sleeping, please don’t wake him up

Ian: I be quiet, like dis (he then starts to whisper) I say ‘it’s OK, Baby Sid’

Me: ok, but don’t wake him please

Ian: (after coming out of the bedroom, with a panic in his voice) I can’t find him, Baby Sid not der

Me: yes, honey, Baby Sid is in our bed, sleeping

Ian: no Mama, he all gone, I can’t find him

Me: don’t worry honey, he is just sleeping (I pick him up to show him)

Ian: Baby Sid all gone (he is starting to cry) I can’t see him, I can’t find him!…..Oh, der he is, he sleeping, he so cute…..whew, dat was close

Menu Plan Jan 28-Feb 3

Mon: Baked Creamy Chicken Taquitos* with Spanish Rice

Tue: Philly Cheese Steak Sloppy Joe Rolls (recipe to come next week)

Wed: Baked Chicken Cordon Blu** with Arkansas Green Beans***

Thr: Taco Bake

Fri: Autumn Sausage Casserole

Sat: Leftovers

Sun: Pan-Seared Steak and Onions with Pepper Jack Potatoes

*Last time I made this it made a lot so I froze some filling, which is what I am using this week
**I don’t actually make the Chicken Cordon Blu, I buy it from the meat counter at our local Fred Meyer Store.  I just use this recipe for the sauce.
***48 oz of frozen green beans is WAY too much for our family so I down size it to one bag

Happy Cooking

Best laid plans….

Have you ever noticed how reality doesn’t match our expectations?

I have a plan on how my mornings should go, but some how that never happens.

This was my plan this morning:

5 am ~ semi-wake up to feed Baby Sid, then go back to sleep

6 am ~ get up, get coffee and pump

6:30 am ~ shower & get ready

7 am ~ feed Baby Sid again

7:20 am ~ turn van on to warm it up for the kidos

7:22 am ~ get Baby Sid changed and in his car seat ready to go

7:30 am ~ get Ian up and ready to go

7:40 am ~ calmly and efficiently load up kids to take to the sitters

Here is what REALLY happened:

4:40 am ~ Baby Sid wakes up and wants to eat

5:50 am ~ Ian goes to bathroom door crying “Mama, I need to see you a minute” not knowing my husband was the one in the shower.

5:52 am ~ Ian crawls into our bed, after I tell him where I was.

6 am ~ put Ian in his bed with a movie and something to drink

6:06 am ~ change Baby Sid and put him in the swing and hope he goes back to sleep

6:10 am ~ pump while drinking coffee (finally!)

6:15 am ~ Ian comes out of his bedroom wanting to ‘watch Tall Star Wars in da living room’

6:34 am ~ turn on Return of the Jedi

6:45 am ~ shower time

7 am ~ find Ian asleep on the couch, time for me to get ready

Sleeping Ian

7:20 am ~ wake up Baby Sid and try to feed him

7:26 am ~ Baby Sid won’t eat take him to clean out his nose

7:31 am ~ try to feed Baby Sid again, still won’t eat

7:37 am ~ go out to start van

7:39 am ~ change Baby Sid, take some pictures because he is so cute and then put him in his car seat

Baby Sid

7:42 am ~ run around the house in circles trying to locate everything we need and get my shoes on

7:55 am ~ put a sweatshirt on Ian and take the still sleeping boy out to car and buckle him in.

7:58 am ~ take Baby Sid out to car

7:50 am ~ make at least four trips back into the house to get things I had forgotten

8:02 am ~ leave for sitters house

Maybe Thursday will be easier….

Happy Reality Check!

Spiderman Orders Room Service ~ Meal Plan Monday Jan 21

This past weekend my mother, my sister, her family, the boys and I stayed downtown in ‘the Big City’.

My sister got tickets to see The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe at the Children’s Theater.  So they decided to stay downtown using my Mom’s free hotel points.  I kind of work downtown so on Friday my mom and sister brought the kids and my brother-in-law and I joined them after work.

The boys and I only stayed Friday night but everyone else stayed till Sunday.

By the time we all got there on Friday it was after five, but the kids wanted to go swimming right away.

Hotel Swimming

So we put off dinner and headed down to the pool.  I sat on the side with Baby Sid while everyone else swam and hung out in the hot tub.

We then went back to order some room service.  We always allow ourselves one time during a hotel stay to order room service.  The price is high but the convenience is so worth it!  Plus, it makes you feel so fancy 🙂

Hotel Room Service

After getting the kids all clean from the pool it was way too late to try to find a place to feed them.  Baby Sid enjoyed his first hotel stay, taking a quick nap on the hid-a-bed where the kids watched a movie.

We spent Saturday wandering around and of course more swimming.

It was a nice little break from life.

This is my first week back to work ‘full’ time.  This year our budget was cut and I am actually at 80% time, so I work four days a week now.  I have decided to take Wednesdays off, contingent on work load.

Because I am still getting used to work again I am making some pretty easy meals during the week.

Menu Plan Jan. 21-27th

Mon:  Beef Stew

Tue:  Meatloaf and I am not sure yet what we will eat with it…

Wed:  Crispy Cheddar Chicken with Beer Mac & Cheese (my new FAV!)

Thr:  Philly Cheese Steak Sloppy Joes

Fri:  Creamy Italian Sausage Pasta

Sat:  Leftovers

Sun:  Sage Pork Chops with Parmesan Rice

Happy  Monday!
