Regrets? Nope, not me, not a one!

This Kid!

I can not even begin to tell you me feelings for this little boy.  I try not to get all mushy but the other night reminded me how lucky I am to have him.

My son is not the best eater.

Yes, family members, he gets that from me.

It’s not that he won’t eat, well not really.  He doesn’t like to eat, the process, the concept, whatever it is, he doesn’t like it.

I can work with a picky eater, but that is not really what his issue is.

He is a squirrel.  He puts food in his cheek, chewing on it forever.  In the past I have found bacon still in his mouth hours after breakfast was over.

This is particularly frustrating at dinner time.  I think I am a very patient person, but even this behavior gets to me after a while.

So here we are Monday night.  I wasn’t feeling well, my husband was elsewhere, Sid was teething and grumpy, it was very hot in our house.

After finally getting dinner made and on the table, I had to feed myself, Baby Sid, who is a very unhappy little baby, and now Ian won’t swallow his food.

I had to get upset with him and put him to bed, which makes him upset and then he tells me he will finish, then he does well for a minute and back again.  Then I get upset again…

It is a vicious cycle.

So after finally getting him feed, the baby feed and asleep and all the other crap I had to do, it was about 9:30 or 10 o’clock and Ian was still awake.

He came out of his room and said “Mama, you lay wit me?”

Normally I don’t, because I don’t want him to depend on me to go to sleep.  But tonight I gave in, we had a hard night and I am ever so paranoid about him feeling unloved or abandoned or some other sad emotion.

After laying there for a few minutes he is starting to drift off.  He reaches over and touches my arm.  Those little fingers travel down to my hand and clasps it.

After a few minutes he wants to roll on to his side so he takes my hand and transfer it to the other one before letting go.

And then he drifts off to sleep.

My heart just melted.

Here I am, thinking I have ruined my child’s psyche by fighting with him over dinner.  I wonder how he will forgive me for making dinner time an unpleasant event  and he doesn’t even think about it.

He just knows that I am his mom and I love him no matter what and he loves me with equal fervor.  And that he wanted me near him when he went to bed and I was there for him.

Life just doesn’t get better than this.

So, no I have no regrets about my life and the decisions I made.  Because every step I took brought me to where I am today and standing next to me is the family that I cherish with every breath I take.

These boys complete me.

I found courtesy is not yet lost

Raising a toddler reminds me everyday that courtesies and manners needs to be taught.

I wanted my son to be polite so when he was learning to talk I also tried to teach him some manners.  When I would give him something I would tell him ‘thank you’ so that when he received something he would say it.

Of course that meant he would say ‘thank you’ when he wanted something.

He is very polite and uses ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ all the time now.  OK, sometimes he has to be reminded.

When I was all prego and riding the bus to work, one day an elderly woman got up to offer me a seat.  Yep, an elder woman, even though there was all these young men around but they were too absorbed in what they were doing with their electronics to notice me waddling on to the bus.  I of course, didn’t take her seat.

I have also had a door close on me because the person walking into the door in front of me didn’t notice I was right behind them.  That one really irks me.

I bring this up because sometimes I wonder if parents are teaching manners anymore or if we are becoming so self-absorbed that we are just loosing them.

Tonight, however, I had a wonderful experience of courtesy by not one but two strangers.  So I had to share it.

I picked up the boys from my sisters after work.

Me: Ian do you need to go pee before we leave

Ian: nope

4 miles from my sister’s house, but too far from home yet.

Ian: I need to go pee-pee

ok, there was an Arco station on my side of the street and a Chevron station on the opposite  side.  I decided to go to the Chevron because I thought it would be cleaner, even if I had to wait to cross traffic.  Remember, I have a toddler who has only been potty trained for about four months now, so time is of the essence.

We pulled into the gas station, which was busy, and parked.  I had to get Ian and Baby Sid out of the car.  When I walked up to the store an employee ran up to hold the door open for me since I was carrying the baby’s car seat and holding Ian’s hand.

Oh and this restroom was a unisex one so it had a toilet and a floor urinal.  So of course he wanted to pee in the urinal!  Exciting stuff for a three-year old boy.

When we left the store another employee was washing my windows.  He told me “I thought Batman needed to see out clean windows to fight crime.” Now I wasn’t getting gas, so this is not something that they do to parked cars.

All the employees were really nice and pleasant  so it made the quick stop a nice one for me.  It is reassuring to know that there are still courteous  people out there.

And just for fun here the conversation between Ian and I when leaving the store.

Ian: I want some candy.  How bout dis one? hmmm…maybe dis one?  oh, dis one looks good.

Me: nope, no candy.  I didn’t bring my purse in so I don’t have any money to buy candy.  Maybe, next time.

Ian: oh, ok.

Ian (in the car): I got some money.  I got money, for me got candy next time.

Me: alright, next time we go to the store I will let you buy some candy

Ian (while at a stop light in front of a Walgreens): dat da store wit candy?  I buy candy der?

Me: nope, that store only sells medicine.

Ian: oh, medicine for Baby Sid?

Me: well medicine for anyone

Ian: oh, I need some medicine.  I need medicine to go down, down in my belly.

Me: why?

Ian: I have a cold. I don’t feel good (he is not sick, by the way)

Oh, this kid just kills me!  I am not sure how we went from him wanting candy to him wanting medicine.

What’s in your microwave?

My toddler LOVES little compartments and boxes and things with doors or drawers.

He loves to put little treasures in little ‘treasure chests’.

We have a 10 gallon glass brewing jug set up in our bedroom for our spare change.  We usually find things that are not money in it.

I don’t know how many ‘magic wands’ he has deposited with the quarters and dimes.  There was a ton of Legos, the key to his bank my dad made him, bouncy balls, instruction manuals, flyers from the mail, marbles, and the list goes on.

It is always interesting to see what he comes up with sometimes.  Tonight was no exception.

While I was cooking dinner he kept running into the living room and back into the kitchen.  He would open the microwave and close it again.

I didn’t think anything of it, because he is always opening and closing it ever since he could reach the button (it is on a low counter).  Usually he would tell me dinner was ready, or that he is cooking dinner too.

Tonight after dinner Tyler asked me where a toy is for Baby Sid, to which Ian jumped up and said “oh, hold onasecond. I get it” and ran off into the kitchen.

I followed him and found this

At least he didn’t turn it on!

Happy findings
