Running Log ~ June 17th

I am a little behind in my writing.  In fact I have a few races I need to share, and you know what the hold up is?  It’s the pictures.  I keep losing my patience with my computer and shutting it down and not finishing the editing of my pictures.  That’s pretty lame huh?

But anyway…

I decided to sign up for a marathon training plan through Another Mother Runner.  It is an 18 week plan and at the end we get a shirt and a medal, with lots of support along the way.  Currently I am on week three.  Not only does the plan have the scheduled long runs but it also has scheduled speed work, which I wouldn’t do on my own.

It times perfectly with the Portland Marathon in October, which I have not yet signed up for.  The price went up and so I need to save some more money before I can sign up…(hope there are still spots left)

motivate

The first week of the training plan was awesome.  I was scheduled to run 19.5 miles and got 22.8 in! woohoo!

The second week, was not as awesome. I missed a run and instead of the 23.5 miles I only got 19.7 miles in.  I was almost afraid I wasn’t going to get that many. I went to the gym to run 6 miles of negative splits but had to get off to refill my water somewhere around 3 miles, the treadmill reset itself before I got back.  I had no idea how far or how long I ran.  I was supposed to run 10 miles Sat morning but I set my alarm for the wrong day and woke up late, so I only got six miles in, but at least they were negative split miles.  I was finally able to do my long run on Sunday morning, but it was so slow! but at least I got it done.

half-marathon

I usually do a long run on the weekend and short runs at work, but with summer here I can’t run at work now, it is just too hot.  It is really hard to find the time during the week to get the miles outside with out the heat.

The hardest part about the training is cross-training and/or strength training.  I can barely find the time to run, let alone time for other things like weights.

I have signed up for four races prior to the marathon and decided that I will not sign up for any more until after.  I have a 10k in July, a 7k in August, a half marathon and a relay with a total of 10-12 miles in September.  Ian has a 1k race at the end of June, which I will have to run with him, but I think I can manage that.

Running Log ~ Feb 20th

I finally got a long in this past weekend.

My cousin is running a half marathon the same weekend I am running my 15k.  So she needs to get her miles in and start tapering off to be ready for her half.  I on the other hand really only need to prepare to do 10 miles in a couple of weeks.

Since I haven’t ran more than 4 miles in a while, I took it slow and I only ran 9 miles instead of 10.  I also had to do some walking in there, and the rest of the ladies sometimes stopped and waited for me to catch up (even though I told them not to).  For the long runs, it’s not about the time, it’s just about the distance.

love the long run

When we got to the 4 mile mark I knew I didn’t want to run all 10 miles, cause we still had to go back to where we started.  I told them to go ahead and we would meet up on their way back.  I walked a little and ran a little till 4.5 miles, then I turned around and headed back, I stopped a couple of times to wait for them, but got cold and board so I kept moving.  They caught up to me and passed me on the return, but I was ok with that.

I like the group run, but I like the solo runs even more.  This worked out nice because I get the fun of a group run after and during pit stops, but I can kind of run by myself (with them all in front of me).  A little of both worlds.

running quote

Lately I have been running while at work, taking a break to get 3 miles on the hill done.  I realized I don’t like running at night anymore, I am just too tired.  And if I am being honest, that is really the time that I get all my crafting done.  I can’t function in the morning, so if I do try to run I am super slow.  It is really great to run in the middle of the day, and it is a nice break from work.  I also enjoy it because the weather here has been so nice, if I waited till the boys went to bed I’d have to go to they gym and I wouldn’t get to run outside.

My cousin wants to do 11 miles this weekend….

Racing Bib and Medal Display

Who know that almost one year ago I would run my first race and become an addict?

After running the Shamrock run last March I knew that I would continue to race as long as I can, as many races I could.  Last year I was able to participate in five races.  Two of those races included finisher medals.

I was a loss for what to do with the bibs and medals from the races.  I am kind of sentimentalist so I knew I wanted to keep them, but how do I display them?

I figured I wanted a sign with an encouraging phrase on it and hooks to hang everything.  I also wanted to incorporate the distances I ran and one that I will run.  I found a blank wood sign at the craft store for less than $5.  I picked up the hooks at my one-stop-shopping store for a couple bucks, including the back brackets for hanging.  Because of the size of the sign I decided to attach the medal hook to the back and purchased a hook specially designed for that.  The paper and vinyl I already had.

I first painted the wood, but didn’t like that look, so I covered it with scrapbook paper using Mod Podge.

After determining the size of the area I had to work with I went to my Silhouette Studio to design my sign.  I used the distance (in miles) of a 5k, 10k, half marathon and full marathon (which I plan on running this year).  I used the quote “Take in the fact that you just did that”  I really liked the quote because it reminds me that every race, every run is an accomplishment.

I planned on using white vinyl for the numbers, because I wanted them in the background and not over powering the sign.

After cutting out the vinyl and taking the backing off the numbers I realized my vinyl was clear, not white.  I am not even sure where I got clear vinyl….

I thought it would be ok, and that the clear vinyl would make subtle.  It was, too much so.  If I looked at the right angle I could see the shiny numbers but I needed them to stand out a little more.

I took my white chalk pen and went around the numbers, it gave them more depth and I was now able to see them.  I actually like it better than if I used white vinyl because it is visible but subtle.  I went over the whole thing with a coat of Mod Podge to protect the paper.

At first I thought I would position the bib hooks so they would hang flat, one hook in each corner of the bib.  But I realized that even with only my five bibs there was a size difference, so that wouldn’t work and I decided I would just hang them by one corner.  This also allows for another hook if I need it.

I attached the hanging brackets and medal hook to the back, with screws.

Side note: I had to use one hanging bracket on each corner because the sign weight was uneven with the weight of the medals.  If I put one bracket in the middle it would tip towards the medal side.

I was going to put it in the living room, but decided the wall above my dresser was a better choice.

So now when I get up in the morning I get to see it.

It will also be easy to add my new bibs after each race.

Of course I am hoping that I will fill it up and need to make another one!

Running Log ~ Jan 29th

OK, so I haven’t been writing much on my running since I posted about doing the Hot Buttered Run way back in November.  That is because, I haven’t done much running.

My running tappered off in December for two reasons.  One: Christmas, I hand-made about 100 Christmas cards to send out, plus other hand-made gifts and crafty things.  So the time when I would normally be running I was crafting instead.  I was OK with that, I knew I wanted to get these items done and I didn’t want to give up time with my family.  Two: a sinus infection.  I started getting really bad headaches, like knock me out headaches.  So when I would run the increase blood flow would cause tremendous pressure in my head, resulting in bad headaches.  A week or so ago I finally went to the doctor and found out I had a bad infection in my left sinus.

I have run a few times, for short durations with mixed results.  Sometimes my head would get worse, sometimes it would stay the same.  What I did do though, was start walking.  My work place is linked to another building via a sky bridge, that building is linked to two others via different sky bridges.  So I can get a two-mile walk in during lunch with out going outside in the not so pleasant weather.

While walking has kept me active I am yearning for a run, a long run.  (I am hoping to this weekend, 10 miles on Sunday!)

love the long run

I have a race coming up in March, so I need to get some distance in before then.  It also has a nasty hill, so I need to get some training in on hills too.  I just can’t seem to set the incline on the treadmill when running, I always feel like I’m gonna fall off.

Last weekend we had unseasonably warm weather so my mom and I took the boys for 1.6 mile walk to a park.  We had lunch and the kids played for a few hours.  I can’t wait for spring.  With the nice weather on Monday I thought I would go for a run at work, brought all my gear but my sports bra.

OK, next try Tuesday, I mapped out a 2 mile run on the trail and road around my work.  I started out and it was colder than the day before and there was a slight mist.  I didn’t mind at first but then my hands started to freeze.  I thought the trail would be ok, since it hadn’t rained in a while, but I had never been on that trail.

Idownhillt wasn’t fine.  It was steep, narrow, muddy and slick.  There were tons of switch backs where I had to slow way down so I didn’t fall.  There were steep slippery slopes I had to walk up.  I took a wrong turn and ended up adding two miles to my run.  So while I felt great that I went out, it was not an enjoyable run.  There were a few times it was nice, but over all not my best.

New plan: run on the road at work only.  Part of the March race, the part with the hill, is basically at my work, so I can get some good training in.  I will vary a two-five mile run during the day, depending on how much time I have.  That way I know I won’t get lost.

Just. Keep. Running.
