MistleToes Plates

Happy New Year everyone!!!

This Pinterest Tuesday is a craft project we made for some Christmas gifts.
I pinned this on to my Hand & Foot Print Art board many months ago with Grandparent gifts in mind.

The pin provides a link to the original source but I couldn’t find it on that website until I Googled it. You can read her post here, she says she paid to have it painted.

My plates don’t have that nice distinct edge, so I didn’t attempt to paint a border.

I went to The Craft Warehouse (our new one) and they had a ceramic paint section where I found paint that said it was dishwasher safe if baked. Now the paint isn’t FDA approved, but it is not supposed to chip off when cured. I bought my plates at my local Fred Meyer store.

After washing the plates with alcohol, as the paint directions state, the fun part begins…

The plates are slippery so the wet feet had a tendency to slip. So I would just wipe off the plate with a wet paper towel and try again, as long as the paint hadn’t dried.

We also made a couple of mugs with little hand prints, they did not turn out as well as I had hoped. With the slickness of the dishes the hands got really blurry, but Ian loved making them. (I did Baby Sid’s while he was sleeping)

The curing process takes place in the oven. You can let the pain air dry, but to make it dishwasher safe you must cure it. Please read the directions on the paint first, and follow what it says.

Place dishes in a cold oven and then turn it on to the temperature the paint states. Cook for about 30 min then shut the oven off, open the door and let dishes cool.

We made a total of six plates and two mugs

Ian decided he needed to help so I got to keep the sixth plate….

I learned that the heel of the foot should not be at the top of the plate in order to have them hanging. I also would have like a plate with a distinct border like the one in the pin, and maybe use a serving platter instead of a dinner plate.

I tried to write ‘mistletoes’ with a stencil because my handwriting is so bad, but that turned out worse and was way more work.

I would also like to try paint pens next time for the details.

I can’t wait to make more hand and foot print art, I just love them!

Pinterest Tuesday 12/4

I love Pinterest, and I am sure you do too. There are always things I pin that I want to try, but never really find the time. I especially want to try the homemade cleaning supplies, and see if they are miraculous as claimed.

I decided to that if I force myself to write about the projects I will actually attempt them. So here is my first post about Pinterest Tuesdays, I will start by posting the first Tuesday of the month. I will only do it once a month at first to give me some time to try the project and write about it.

It said the “miracle of baking soda” and the blog it was linked to calls it a “Kitchen Miracle Cleaner” so I thought it would be perfect for my crockpot. After cooking some higher fatty roasts it gets a ring around it from where the top of the liquid was.

I added enough peroxide to the baking soda to make a paste. The mixture is watery at first but the baking soda will absorb it if you let it sit and thicken up.

The reaction of hydrogen peroxide with sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) produces carbon dioxide, sodium hydroxide and carboinc acid.

Sodium hydroxide (a.k.a. lye) is a caustic soda (and is basic) and is commonly used as a detergent because it can dissolve fats, grease, oil and proteins. So it worked great on my yucky ring around my crockpot.

Can’t wait till I find something else to clean with this cleaning paste.

Oreo Cookies in Rice Krispy Treats…Genius!

Crabby boys, sleepy mama and working on two different projects meant this post didn’t get finished yesterday.

Tis the season for baking!! I could really go for some Christmas cookies right now. Wink, wink.

It is apparent the holiday season is upon us if you have been to Pinterst lately. There are all sorts of wonderful Christmas cookie/dessert recipes and decorating ideas.

I found one last night that I just HAD to share! Peppermint Oreo Krispy Treats, that’s right Oreo cookies in marshmallow goodness. Can you say super yummy! I haven’t made them yet, but I plan to this weekend to take to our friends house when we get our Christmas tree.

I don’t repin recipes to Pinterest, I just save them in my Plan to Eat recipe book. That way when I want to cook them it is easy to add to my meal plan and shopping list.

Since I haven’t made them yet I don’t have a picture to show you and I didn’t want to steal the authors, so here is my mixer which will get plenty of use this holiday season.

My Little Man Mustache Baby Shower

Do you have a second baby shower when the next kid is the same gender as the first?

What is the proper protocol for baby showers? Who really cares? If you want one have one!

My sister threw my shower when I was pregnant the first time with my oldest son. When I was about six months pregnant with my second son she asked me about having another one. To which I replied, “I am not throwing it, so it is not up to me.”

She and my mom decided to have a shower-meet-the-new-baby-party after he was born. And naturally I was left to choose my own theme and make my own decorations.

I decided to do a Little Man with a Mustache theme. I liked all the mustache and tie stuff I have seen on Pinterest.

While this happened in Sept. I figured I should post about it while we are still in Movember since it was full of mustaches!

Here are some of the pictures from the party:

Our take home treats. I just love the “Before you mustache (must dash) please grab a treat” sign. I also made a couple of banners of mustaches and neck ties
“Wet your Whisker” for the lemonade punch
For the take home treats my sister made sugar cookies in the shape of mustaches. She even had to make a ‘cookie cutter’
I made little mustaches that we put on bendy straws for some sipping
My mom found these mustache stickers at Party City, so it is only fitting the man of the hour wear one.

I made this banner that said “Boy oh Boy” I saw a similar one here via Pinterest
My aunt made Sid’s cake, it was Kahlua cream! Can you say super YUMMM!! I love the onesies with neck ties
I also made some food tags and got the Keep Calm sign idea from the same blog as the banner. My sister made “Cigar” pretzels dipped in chocolate.
