Running Log ~ Trail Edition

The long run.

I really do love the long  run. And it’s even more important now that I will be running 26.2 miles coming up.

EEK. Did I just write that?

I did! I signed up for the Newport Marathon in June.

So I was in desperate need of double-digit mile weekends.  My cousin was training for a very long 20 mile trail race and also needed some miles.  So when she asked if I could do a 15 mile trail run with her I jumped at the chance.  Not too many people want to run 15 miles with you.

An experienced Forest Park runner friend dropped us at a starting point where we could run on Wildwood trail (see map) and end up on Old German Town road 15 miles later.

So it had been raining that week. And the week before, and the week before…..I mean this is the Pacific Northwest guys. It was raining that morning and I was not excited about that but since the trial is in the forest the trees would keep most of the rain off.

Even though I couldn’t feel much of the rain falling down I sure felt the aftermath on the ground. There was a little bit of mud on the trail.

MSS_TrailRun01I may have almost had my foot eaten my a mud monster no less than six times or almost drowned in quickmud.

We kept having to slow down to find a way around the mud. It wasn’t just like a little bit of water on the path, or a little mud. The mud was ankle deep in most places, our shoes would get stuck if we walked or ran through it.  It added at least an hour or more to our run.

MSS_TrailRun02

The mud also made things very slippery, so if wasn’t for my natural grace and dexterity I probably would have fallen over the edge of the cliff to my demise on numerous occasions. Or maybe I would have just fallen to the ground and gotten muddy and hurt. Either way it wouldn’t have been fun.

I learned that on the trails even when you start at the top of the hill you still have to run up hill all the time. The whole run was up hill with a little down hill, then up hill again.

MSS_TrailRun03

I need lots of water on my runs no matter how far, 1 mile or 10 I bring my water bottle.  As it turned out neither of us had enough water with us. We were in bad shape and found this beautiful little waterfall where we stopped for a fill up. I dropped some of my Nuun water purifying electrolyte tablets in the water and was good as gold! Ok, full disclaimer…Nuun is not a water purifier, but it is an electrolyte replacement tablet and is delightful.

So here is the thing about trail runs, it’s really hard to end them early. Cause you know, you are out in the middle of the trail. So my cousin wasn’t feeling well and needed to end the run early so we called our Expert and he said ‘don’t worry there is a bail out option.’

Turns out the bailout option was still two to three miles away and then we would still have a mile or two till the end. But I guess it was the shorter distance, and my cousin’s friend met us part way after we took the turn off and ran with us the rest of the way.

If we hadn’t had to take the bailout option I never would have come across this view:

MSS_TrailRun04

After running what seemed like up hill all day the turn off finally took us down hill and at the bottom the trees opened up, the rain stopped and there was the St. Johns bridge in all it’s glory.

Our run wasn’t the full 15 miles but it was in the double digits, so that was good. Unfortunately I had poor cell service so the GPS on my phone (because it’s an iPhone, which doesn’t actually have GPS) so we don’t know our exact mileage.

I realized that day that while I love the woods, and I love being out in the woods, I am not a trail runner. I couldn’t really see any of the scenery around me because I was watching the ground to make sure the forest monsters don’t reach up to trip me. Every time we got up to pace we had slow down to a slow walk around the mud pits. When you get somewhere it’s a beautiful view, but I could walk there…

Next 15 mile run was in the city on a much nicer day and much easier to complete.

Just. Keep. Running.

Custom Daredevil Shirt ~ Silhouette Blog Hop & a Giveaway!!

When Sid turned two we had an Evel Knievel themed birthday party for him.  This seemed perfect for our little daredevil.  Admittedly when discussing this theme with Ian he was a little concerned. It took me a while to figure out why, and then I explained to him that Evel is a person’s name and that he was not evil, and when I say ‘daredevil’ I also don’t mean someone who is bad. I just love how kid brains process things.

Evel Knievel Party Decorations

Originally I wanted to make Sid an Evel Knievel suit. And when I say ‘I wanted to make’, I really mean I wanted my mom to make him one (see picture).

But it was so hot and we had lots of water activities at his party that he wouldn’t really be wearing it…..so I scratched that idea.

I also thought of just making him a shirt that looks like the top of Evel’s suite. Think tuxedo shirt….

But I still wasn’t sold on that idea.  Then I found an image somewhere on Google that I thought would be great for his shirt and a whole new idea was formed.

I wanted to customize Sid’s shirt so I took the image traced and altered it. (As I do with everything I make.)

Sid Evel Knievel birthday shirt

It is convenient that Sid’s name only has three letters and fit under the motorcycle in place of the engine.  I used two colors of flocked HTV (HTV=Heat Transfer Vinyl), it’s the kinda fuzzy stuff. I personally think it holds up better than regular HTV by the way.

It was a little difficult to get a picture of him in his shirt on his birthday (left) but he still wears this shirt all the time (he’s three and a half now).

Custom Evel Knievel Shirt

I went ahead and used the same image for his party favors.  I simply replaced Sid with Ride, as I felt people wouldn’t want to take home bags that say “Sid” on them.  For the bags I used the printable HTV for light colors (there is a difference between the one for light fabric and the one for dark fabric, I explain it in this post) and had my Cameo cut around the outside of the image, and the larger pieces inside.

Evel Knievel Party Favors

Inside the bag is a matching tattoo and sticker also made with my Silhouette Cameo.

Turns out that this Silhouette Challenge theme was all about Fabrics! So I just knew this project would fit in perfectly. Now since using HTV is only one option with working with your Silhouette and fabrics these wonderful ladies have come up with some other amazing ideas for you.  My Silhouette Challenge buddies and I are all sharing projects on our blogs today, so peruse the projects below for a wealth of Silhouette inspiration!

Menu Plan Monday Jan 25th

MPM_header_2016_150

Happy Monday!

Did you realize this is the last week of January? I realized that I hadn’t started Ian’s birthday party stuff and his birthday is in March. Typically by this time I would be half way through cutting his invites by now!

Don’t worry, I spent most of yesterday designing them and I am really happy with how they turned out.  Of course that leaves the rest of the party….

I gotta say with my new job I am getting home later than before, but I do like it a lot more. So I get home, start dinner, fight with the kids to eat, do the bedtime routine and they are off to bed. whew! I get maybe two hours with them from when I get home until bedtime and it is nonstop for me. I don’t know what life will be like when baseball starts!

What is on your menu board this week?

Race Recap ~ PRC Winter 5k December

I thought was done racing for the winter, but I am now registered for the PRC Winter 5k series.

4e335701-b5c2-47cd-b650-e71a3abfd3f8

Through a contest with Run Oregon I won an entry to this Run with Paula/Portland Running Company race series.  There are 3 races; one in Dec. one in Jan. and one in Feb. (which unfortunately I will be out-of-town for).

I had not heard of this race prior to the contest so I was really excited when I won.  If you want to participate you can do all three races or however many of them you can.  You do of course save money if you register for all three.  They are all 5ks, around one of the PRC stores, so quick and easy.  The price doesn’t include a shirt (and is inexpensive for a race), however you can buy one.  Which of course I did, and at each race they put a patch on the sleeve to indicate what race you running.

MSS_Winter5k01

I feel like I have come to a place in my racing experience where I can say ‘it’s just a 5k.’  I don’t say as a bad thing, I love that distance. I say to myself so I don’t get the pre-race jitters. I say it so that I don’t have to go to bed at 8pm the night before or have my kids sleep over at my moms. Because to be honest most weekends I run farther than that for training.

I was feeling the same about this race until the long drive to the race location.  I started to panic about how small the race was. I really like small races, I like the small community feeling, personal aspects of them. But this one might be the smallest I have participated in, there was less than 200 runners.

I started to get paranoid about coming in last. Now don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with being last to cross, someone has to finish up the race.  But what I was afraid of is that this race was geared toward elite runners and that I wouldn’t be in the same league as them. So I would finish so far behind everyone else. I started to panic that I shouldn’t be going and participating.

I got to the store where the race was being held along with packet pick up and the pre-party.  And I felt ridiculous for doubting that I belonged. This race, just like every race I have been to, had a wide diversity of racers, everyone from elite runners to walkers. So I got my bib, some coffee, a cookie and put my goodies back in my car. Then hung out in the store and mingled until race time.

It had been raining prior to the race, I mean like dumping buckets of water for days. The race director sent out an email warning that there might be some slight course changes due to high water.  Included in the email was a picture of a part of the course that was turned into a pond.

I decided to try out my new Skora Tempo’s on the road.  Luckily the rain held off for the race, but the ground & course was still wet and we did have a couple detours.  The Tempo’s uppers are a thin mesh like fabric and I was a little concerned about water, but the website talks about how great they are through puddles.

MSS_Winter5k03

And I gotta agree with them! When I went through a puddle (which I mostly tried to avoid) or got water on them some other way, my feet were almost instantly dry again. And while I was afraid of blisters again, that didn’t happen either.  I had a great pace on the most flat course and was complemented on my running outfit.

The after party had bagel breakfast sandwiches, cookies, coffee, raffles and a photo booth.  Not to mention in store discounts. I had to leave because of a prior engagement that day, but I did get my picture taken.

I had a ton of fun and can’t wait for the next race this Sat. but hopefully the course will not have so much water!
